In support of the transformation and renovation of the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit and of mental health services at the Jewish General Hospital

Montreal – May 7, 2018 - On Sunday, May 6, 2018, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Foundation and Auxiliary held their 4th annual MINDSTRONG fundraising fitness event at Midtown Sanctuaire. The event raised $1.4 million to advance the much-needed renovation of the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit at the JGH, as well as maintain and enhance many crucial mental health programs that help thousands of patients each year.

Nearly 350 participants, including 25 JGH nurses, 35 staff from the Psychiatry department and 19 administrative staff from the CIUSSS West-Central Montreal engaged in this fun-filled day of exercise and sweating out the stigma. The event was hosted by TSN690’s Tony Marinaro and Malik Shaheed, TV host and social advocate. Freeway Frank and Lee Haberkorn from Virgin Radio where also on hand.

Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Canadians, and for 75% of those affected it begins in early childhood, adolescence or young adulthood.

“Every day we face the devastating effects of mental illness on patients and families –
from common disorders such as depression, anxiety and addiction, to severe mental illness including bipolar and psychotic disorders and the tragic consequences of mental illness; poverty, social isolation and suicide. It’s a huge comfort to have the support of the Montreal community to help address these challenges…”
- Dr. Karl Looper, Chief of Psychiatry at the JGH

The Foundation and Auxiliary of the Jewish General Hospital, organizers of MINDSTRONG, thank all of the generous benefactors and participants who made this incredible fundraising event possible. The donations, sponsorships and participant pledges, as well as the silent auction together brought in $1.4 Million.

“What a resounding success,” says Larry Sidel, Senior Vice-President and Chief Development Officer of the JGH Foundation. “I am left speechless by the outpouring of support. I want to personally thank all those who helped us “sweat out the stigma” and raise impressive amounts of money so we can provide those suffering from mental illness with the same quality of care as anyone suffering from a physical illness. These patients deserve a bright, beautiful and state of the art environment that promotes healing and well-being. Now we can make that happen.”
